The Zoo and Tanaka Farms

We have passes to the local zoo and have visited a couple of times. While the zoo is known for their monkeys, there is also a little farm with farm animals. Logan loved petting the goats, but Charlotte was totally freaked out by them. She wanted to be held the whole time and told us, "no, no, no" if we got to close to the goats and sheep. We just got a couple of pictures ...

Charlotte stayed far away from the goats. She loves to sit in chairs, the bigger the better.

Last week we took a tour of Tanaka Farms, a local farm that grows organic produce. We got to take a tour of the farm in a wagon pulled by a tractor. We sampled "just picked" carrots, beans, sugar snap peas, tomatoes, and sweet corn. The best part was when we got to pick our own strawberries at the end of the tour. They were perhaps the best strawberries I have ever tasted! The best part was that everything was organic and we ate it right off the plant. Definitely go visit Tanaka Farms. They have watermelon tours starting this week.

Here are some pictures from late May and early June. We hope to put up some pictures of our new house soon. We are getting settled and we're really enjoying the neighborhood. We enjoy going to the park near our house and taking walks around the lake. There are lots of ducks, geese, and turtles there. The neighbors have been really friendly and there are lots of kids around.

May Update

This month has been filled with lots of packing and working on our new house. Kevin has spent a lot of his time down there. We've made a lot of improvements. Kevin has changed a lot of the fixtures and hardware. The master bath looks beautiful after the work he did there. There's also been a lot of painting and peeling off old paint for hours on end (not a fun job). And then there's been lots of adventures in plumbing. We've had lots of help with the house from my parents and Kevin's dad, and babysitting help from Grandma Grant and Grandpa and Grandma Thone. Thank you!! We couldn't do this without you!

We're currently trying to find a tenant for our townhouse. This will be our last week here. We are looking forward to living in our new home and enjoying our new kitchen and other improvements.

Kevin has completed all of his doctoral coursework and is now a doctoral candidate! He plans to work on his dissertation this summer. His broken ankle is healing slowly. He is mostly just using his walking cast now without crutches, and is doing PT weekly.

Logan and Charlotte are doing well. They are talking more and can follow some basic commands. They love animals and can make a lot of the animal sounds. Charlotte is a little lady. She loves to wear necklaces and likes to wash her hands by herself, and wipe her own nose. She recently began to say "yeah" and "no." She is starting to emerge as the leader of the two. Logan is a sweetie. He gives nice open mouth kisses and is obsessed with the remote control, cell phones, and Kevin's video games. He loves to say hi to the little dogs we see at the park.

On Tuesday we found out that Baby #3 is a girl! I am excited that the girls will outnumber the boys in the Grant home. (Maybe the next dog will have to be a boy).

Everything with the baby looks great and I am feeling her move now. Our due date is 9/27/10.

New House!

We are moving! We are currently in escrow on a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home in a great neighborhood! Our new house is 1/4 mile from a lake and close to hiking trails. We are excited to be moving to a bigger place in a great area to raise a family. We will most likely move at the end of May. Right now we are contemplating paint colors and a possible kitchen remodel.

This month we have been enjoying warmer weather. The babies and I like to spend time at the park during the afternoons. Logan and Charlotte are starting to explore the playground and love going down slides by themselves. They love airplanes and helicopters and always hear them and try to find them in the sky. They both love dogs and Charlotte often barks like a dog when she sees one.

Both Logan and Charlotte still love their favorite TV shows Yo Gabba Gabba and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. It is fun to watch them dance to the music in the shows.

They are currently in a food throwing phase. (Not very fun for us). We recently invested in "leashes" for their cups. (Check out nothrow.com). They also love to feed me their food, which is kind of cute. I made the mistake of letting them taste a bit of an M & M this week and now they point to the M&M bowl all day and "ask" for an M&M.

Logan and Charlotte have been taking more steps and are getting closer to walking.

I am about 14 weeks pregnant with Baby #3. I am feeling good and we are looking forward to finding out the sex in late April. I got to see the baby again on ultrasound last week. I think we have another cute one on the way!

February Update

Logan and Charlotte are doing well. They both take a few steps, but are not really walking yet. Crawling is much more efficient, so why walk? Logan is getting all 4 molars and some of his eye teeth. We'll be glad when that's over with, but then I suppose then it will be Charlotte's turn. They both notice details on clothes, and accessories, like earrings. They always check to see what earrings I am wearing. (They prefer dangly ones). We had a fun picnic/play date in the park with friends Abby and Whitney, but we didn't get any pictures.

Here are some pictures from this month:

We went to Kevin's high school alumni baseball game. Kevin pitched an inning and batted twice. Logan and Charlotte enjoyed crawling around in the grass and finding nasty objects to put in their mouths.

We ventured over to Kevin's work the other day and ate lunch with him at the cafeteria. Logan and Charlotte liked the food, but made a huge mess on the floor. (Kevin cleaned it up). They really enjoyed the frozen yogurt we ate for dessert.

New Blog Name to Come ...

"Grant Squared" will no longer be an accurate title, so we'll be changing our blog name. We are excited to announce that we are expecting Baby #3! The news came as a huge surprise to us! The new baby is due in late September. So far we've had two ultrasounds and only seen one baby, although we'd be all set with the gear needed for another set of twins. We're happy about having a new baby, but also a bit nervous about having 3 little ones under the age of 2.

January Happenings

Logan and Charlotte are at a fun age. They both know who Daisy is and point to her. Logan tries to say "Daisy". Logan also tries to "moo" like a cow. When Logan hears the garage door open he says, "Da Da." It's pretty cute. Charlotte LOVES to dance. She dances to many different types of music, but she especially likes the theme song to the show "Yo Gabba Gabba." Sometimes I play the song just because I want to see her dance.

Kevin has been working hard on his doctoral studies. He starts his final class next week.

We've done some fun things this month. We went to California Adventure in the rain this week (although we didn't get any pictures of that). The babies didn't get too wet, but Kevin and I sure did. Logan even fell asleep in the rain, so I guess it didn't bother him too much. We still had a fun time and enjoyed the park being less crowded. Here are some of our pictures from January.

Logan and Charlotte had a fabulous first birthday party! We celebrated with lots of extended family (19 people total) at the Wiens home. We ate pizza and birthday cake and ice cream. Then we watched a slide show of our favorite photos from the babies' first year. Last, we opened presents. It was a great day!

The house was decorated with lots of first birthday decor. Even the highchairs were decked out.

One Year Old

We made it! We all survived the first year. Charlotte and Logan are one today! This year has really flown by! Logan and Charlotte have really changed in the past year. Both babies are cruising around furniture and crawl up stairs. They eat 3 meals of table foods a day. They drink on their own from straw cups and sippy cups. I am proud to have made my goal of nursing them for a year and we are still going strong. (Yes, it is possible to successfully nurse twins, but it is a lot of work in the beginning).

We are blessed to be Logan and Charlotte's parents. It has been amazing getting to know these two little people. We can't wait to see what is to come in their second year.

12 month stats (the babies have more than tripled their birth weights):

Logan - 21.5 lbs (birth weight was 6 lbs 2 oz)
Charlotte - 20.5 lbs (birth weight was 5 lbs 4 oz)
Charlotte is taller than Logan by an inch or two.

Our friends from Maryland, the Lapointes, came out to California for a visit. We were fortunate enough to see them twice! The babies had fun playing with 2.5 year old Audrey. Audrey is smart and has a lot of energy.

Christmas 2009

Logan and Charlotte had a great first Christmas! First we went to a Christmas Eve service at our church. Then we spent time with the Wiens side of the family. We stayed overnight at the Wiens home on Christmas Eve. The babies woke up a full house of 14 people at 6 a.m. on Christmas morning. (They couldn't wait to open presents!) Midday on Christmas, we drove to the Grant home to celebrate Christmas with Kevin's family. The babies have had a lot of fun playing with all of their new toys over the past few days. Here's our Christmas picture! You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to get two babies to look at the camera at the same time. We are looking forward to spending time with both sides of the family next week. This will be Logan and Charlotte's first Christmas. They are going to love all of that wrapping paper and fun, new toys! Have a blessed Christmas, everyone!

11 Months Old

Logan and Charlotte are 11 months old. I can't believe we are almost at the end of their first year! This month Logan weighs in at 21 lbs. and Charlotte weighs 19.5 lbs.

It's exciting to see Logan and Charlotte's personalities develop. Logan is our little explorer. He tries to figure out how things work and loves to rummage through drawers. Charlotte is always on the go and now cruises around furniture. She is quick to express her displeasure by throwing down something she doesn't want. When she doesn't want to nap she lets us know by throwing everything out of her crib in protest. Charlotte also love to pull hair, so watch out!

Logan and Charlotte both started saying the same first word this month: "hi!" I sure feel welcome at home with all of the "hi's" I get. Charlotte also says "up".

Kevin, Logan, and Charlotte were all sick this past month with what we suspect was H1N1. I was sure I was going to get it too, but somehow I escaped it for now. We had a lot of sleepless nights, but everyone is feeling better now.

We had a nice Thanksgiving at my aunt and uncle's home, with lots of family to see. Logan and Charlotte loved the food! They tried everything and loved it all, especially our family's famous "Orange Goo" mandarin orange salad and the pumpkin pie! Then we spent a couple of days at my parents' home. The babies are very interested in their three kitties.

Ducks Celebration Quilt

The Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007!! That was such an awesome, unforgettable season. Kevin and I were fortunate to attend almost every playoff game that season. (Somehow Kevin was out of town for the last game when the Ducks actually won the Cup. I was there to see the Ducks win the Cup and it was an incredible experience!) Yes, the Ducks are lousy this year, but we can still look back on the 2006-2007 season with fond memories.

At each hockey playoff game, each fan is given a towel to wave during the game. We collected a lot of towels during the 2006-2007 playoffs, and we've collected a few more during the playoffs in the subsequent two seasons.

My mom graciously volunteered to make a quilt out of our collection of towels. (We share season tickets with my parents, so she made a second quilt with their towels). One side features the orange towels and on the other side is warm, black fleece. It's a cozy, memory-evoking blanket that we use at home and that we will take to Ducks games. Thanks, Mom, for making an awesome quilt! We love it!

Commuter Kevin

Kevin tends to have an adventure every year and this was no exception. Two years ago he started playing ice hockey, last year the babies were adventure enough, and this year he has started to bike commute.

He can be seen wearing a bright orange shirt and riding a sleek black Marin commuter bike. Kevin has been riding his bike to work a couple of days a week. It's a 7-mile commute each way, and it takes him about 35 minutes. He says it's a great way to get exercise, have some alone time and save on gas. So be on the lookout for this new bike commuter on the road.

10 Months Old

Logan and Charlotte are 10 months old! Here's our update ...

LOGAN started crawling a couple of weeks ago. Now he can race his sister! Logan learned how to wave "bye bye" this month. Logan has some kind of nap disorder where he only naps for 30-45 minutes at a time (one sleep cycle). It's really frustrating! If anyone knows how to fix it, please contact me.

CHARLOTTE is now an expert crawler (she's super fast). She can also pull herself up. Soon she'll be cruising around the coffee table. Charlotte recently learned how to clap. Charlotte is known for stealing pacifiers and toys from her brother.

I am still nursing the babies and enjoying it. Sometimes they nurse together on our twin nursing pillow and they look at each other as they nurse. It's pretty cute. That doesn't usually last long and they start poking each other in the eyes! The babies are also on 3 meals of table foods a day. They feed themselves, and can eat almost anything we eat. I guess I'm done with the baby food making. That didn't last long! If anyone is interested in some green bean puree, feel free to take it off my hands. Right now dog toys are a big hit with the babies. (Charlotte is sometimes known as "Puppy Charlotte" because she likes to carry things by mouth). They both love to play in Daisy's crate.

Kevin recently returned from a worked-related trip to Vermont. He visited a college for students with disabilities, saw colorful leaves, and got to visit some of the quaint towns. During Kevin's absence, the babies and I were supposed to stay with my parents, but my mom came down with the flu. Thanks to Mom and Dad Grant, Grandpa and Grandma Thone, and Amanda and Laura for stopping by to help!

I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. We have a lot to be thankful for this year!

We love fall!

We are huge fans of fall! We love cooler weather, apple crisp, pumpkin desserts, pumpkin spice lattes from Starbucks, colorful leaves, and all things fall! We also love football (go Notre Dame)! Plus, we started dating during the fall, so this season brings back a lot of memories. Kevin is even growing his own pumpkins this year. Still on the vine, there are only two of them, and they aren't much bigger than a softball. Maybe they'll be ready by Thanksgiving and we can make pumpkin pie out of them.

We've enjoyed some cooler weather this week, and by cooler, I mean under 80 degrees! We even broke out the beanies when we went to Disneyland earlier this week. With Charlotte in her Pooh costume, the babies attracted even more attention than usual. It was fun seeing my sister and her boyfriend perform in the Pixar parade. Amanda performs as a cowgirl on the "Toy Story" float, and as a bug on the "Bug's Life" float.

Logan is crazy about books! He loves to sit and read, whether it be with an adult, with Charlotte, or by himself. He loves books so much he cries when the book is finished because he wants it to go on forever. Let's hope he likes books this much in high school and college!

9 Months Old!

It's hard to believe the first year is 3/4 over! It's going by so fast. Here's our update for 9 months:

CHARLOTTE:

Baby Charlotte is CRAWLING! She began crawling two weeks ago and she really gets around. When Kevin gets home from work, Charlotte crawls right to him. Charlotte is a high energy baby. She likes to explore her world and is great at screaming in delight. Charlotte has 2 teeth now and there's 3 more coming in.

LOGAN:

Baby Logan loves to smile, laugh, and is a really sweet, fun guy. He's got a cute pudgy belly. (See his picture in the kiddie pool below). Logan continues to scoot on his back and doesn't show much interest in crawling. Logan's most recent accomplishment is that he can use a straw cup.

This month we introduced yogurt and Cherrios, both of which the babies love. They are eating more finger foods. They like pretty much anything we give them.

Last Games of the Season

Today we took the babies to an afternoon Angels game. It was the last home game of the regular season. We went with Kevin's parents. Grandpa Grant got Logan and Charlotte their own rally monkeys today. The babies love their monkeys, which they held for most of the game. With the division title already secured, we saw mostly "B Team" players, but it was fun, nonetheless.

In other news, Kevin's hockey team won the league championship for their summer league! Kevin scored a goal and his parents were there to see the big win. I was home with the babies, but Kevin's parents kept me updated with text messages. His team took home the cup, and by cup, I mean pint glasses. Kevin loves his team ... they have been together for 4 seasons now. He was the number one scorer on his team this season! Now we look forward to the start of the NHL season. Go Ducks!

Baby Dedication

Today Logan and Charlotte were dedicated to the Lord. We were blessed to have many family members and friends support us by attending the dedication. Our church does baby dedications separate from the regular services. It was nice because there was time to focus on each family. There was even a slide show with photos of all of the children being dedicated. The babies did well during the ceremony. We were worried that Logan might cry when the pastor held him, but Logan did great! Logan decided to play with the pastor's face while the pastor prayed. Charlotte, our paper-lover, chewed on the pastor's notes.

We chose a life verse for our children, which was read during the ceremony:

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."
Matthew 22:37-39

After the ceremony, we gathered at Kevin's parent's home for a late lunch. We ate yummy carnitas. We also found time to take some family pictures. Mom and Dad, thanks so much for opening your home to us!

8 Months Old!

Logan and Charlotte are 8 months old! The summer has really flown by.

Stats . . .
-Logan weighs in at 18 lbs. Charlotte is almost 18 pounds, but is actually longer than Logan. It's amazing to me that they are growing so well, considering how slow their weight gain was in the beginning.
-Logan has a whopping 5 teeth now! Charlotte has no teeth, but she has the cutest gummy smile.

-The babies have tried some new foods, including graham crackers, rice cakes, casserole, and tastes of chicken, and mac 'n cheese. So far, they like everything, except for green beans. They continue to despise green beans, even when I sneak them in with the veggies they do like.
-Charlotte likes to be on her tummy. She rocks on her hands and knees and can scoot around a bit. We think she will be crawling soon!
-Logan still hates to be on his tummy. He has figured out that he can scoot around our wood floors on his back, by pushing off with his heels.
-It's fun to see the babies interacting more. Charlotte can get pretty crazy and Logan likes to laugh at her. They have started stealing toys from each other, but they don't seem to mind yet.

Happenings . . .
-Last week we took the babies to Disneyland for the first time. They really enjoyed "It's a Small World," especially Logan. We got "First Visit" buttons for them, which they sported on their stroller. It was so hot when we visited, but the babies did well.
-This week Kevin and I escaped to the beach for our church small group bonfire. We enjoyed visiting with friends and eating hot dogs and s'mores!
-Kevin is hard at work with the start of the new school year. I am blessed to be able to take another semester off work to care for the babies.

Our Staycation

Last week we visited my parents' home in south Orange County for a "staycation." It was good to spend some time away, go out to dinner a couple of times, swim in the pool, and have help with the babies. My parents made one of their bedrooms into a nursery and the babies actually slept better than they do at home. (Logan slept in a walk-in closet, but didn't seem to mind). We also celebrated my 29th birthday. I can't believe I'll be 30 next year!

First Beach Trip

Recently, we took Logan and Charlotte to the beach for the first time. We went to Seal Beach. It was a nice day and the water was really warm for So. Cal. beaches.

7 Months Old

Logan and Charlotte are 7 months old today! Here's what's been happening in the past month:

Milestones . . .

-Logan has 2 teeth now (the 2 bottom front teeth)! He has done pretty well with teething.
-Both Logan and Charlotte are sitting up unassisted! They are enjoying playing with some of their new toys while sitting (until they topple over and it's not so fun anymore).
-Logan is sleeping like a champ at night. He sleeps 11+ hours without waking!
-We've continued introducing solids. In the past couple of weeks the babies have tried sweet potatoes, squash, pears, and puffs. Today they enjoyed a taste of frozen yogurt.

Things We've Done Recently . . .

-Yesterday we took our first trip to a playground. The babies shared one of the baby swings and seemed to like it.
-We enjoyed walking around the shops at Knott's Berry Farm. It's the perfect little outing for the babies. We're having to learn how to maneuver the double-wide stroller in and out of shops.
-We've been walking to our local park in the mornings, since it gets so hot later in the day. Daisy gets to come with us. She loves to drink from the big sprinklers and the babies enjoy watching her.
-The babies continue to enjoy lounging in their baby pool on hot days. Charlotte amuses us when she tries to lap water out of the pool like a dog! She is our "wild child!"

Hangin' with the Halos

We rooted for our Angels this week against the Cleveland Indians. The Halos won 9-3. Whoohoo! Our favorite player, Howie Kendrick, had a home run and 5 RBI's! Logan was very excited. However, he is not terribly excited when everybody screams at the same time... that actually scares him a bit. Perfect weather for baseball especially with our seats in the shade, hanging out with Auntie Laura & Uncle Stephen.

Adventures in Food

The babies started eating "baby food" this month. It's kind of messy, but I think it's fun seeing the babies try new foods. I am making our baby food myself since it's cheaper and tastes better than commercial food. So far the baby food making has gone really well and it's pretty easy to do. (I'm using a blender, at the recommendation of chef Alton Brown). I've made peas, green beans, and sweet potatoes. I discovered that sweet potatoes are really tasty and that I've been missing out! For fruits, I'm just mashing them. They've tried bananas, avocados, peaches, nectarines, pluots, and applesauce. So far, Logan will eat ANYTHING. I think he's going to be our good eater. Charlotte is a bit more discretionary in her tastes. She ends up liking most things after a few tries, but still isn't crazy about green beans. (I guess she takes after her daddy). They've also tried puffs. They give us a "what the heck did you just put into my mouth" look! Since they're doing well with baby food, I'm hoping Logan and Charlotte be able to try Kevin's great cooking in a few months.

6 Months Old

I can't believe Logan and Charlotte are 6 months old! While the days go by slow, the weeks and months have flown by! We celebrated their 1/2 birthday with cupcakes. The babies even got to try some frosting!

Updates for this month:

-Logan weighs 15.25 lbs.
-Charlotte weighs 14.5 pounds.
-They are about the same length and they still have big heads.
-The babies tried rice cereal at 5.5 months. They like it. They have one meal of cereal daily. We will likely start fruits and veggies soon.
-Logan and Charlotte are now sleeping in their cribs. They are sleeping separately since they seemed to be waking each other up when they were together.
-We're experiencing some regression in sleeping through the night and napping. :-(
-We stopped swaddling the babies. They seem to be adjusting.
-Both babies can now roll both from tummy to back and from back to tummy.
-Kevin discovered that they like to be held upside down.

The Baby Pool

5 Months Old!

Logan and Charlotte are 5 months old! They are just getting over their first colds. Logan got sick first and was kind enough to share his cold with Charlotte and Kevin. It has definitely affected their sleep. We're hoping to get back to better nights of sleeping. I've been trying to get the babies on some type of routine. It's difficult because Logan takes very short naps (or none at all) and Charlotte naps much better.

I've finally started putting pictures in albums from my pregnancy and the babies' births. I have to say I miss being pregnant, but I'm glad my babies are here.

First Angels Game

On Saturday night we took Logan and Charlotte to their first Angels game. They did really well, although Logan was kind of scared of the cheering. Charlotte loved looking around at all the people. It was a good game and the Angels won 1-0. After the game, we visited the Nick Adenhart memorial.

Mother's Day and First Swim

Yesterday I celebrated my first Mother's Day. It is so amazing to finally be a mom! Kevin got bagels for breakfast. He gave me a beautiful amethyst and diamond necklace.

We spent the rest of the day with my family (also celebrating my sister's birthday and college graduation). The babies had their first swim in the spa (not too hot, of course). They loved splashing and kicking in the warm water.

4 Months Old

The babies are 4 months old today! They are doing well and getting big. At their 4 month doctor's appointment, we found out that both Logan and Charlotte are long and have big heads. That must mean big brains! Logan now weighs 12.5 pounds. Charlotte weighs 11.5 pounds. They both smile and talk a lot and Charlotte squeals when she is excited. Logan recently laughed out loud for the first time! The doctor says we need to do more "tummy time", but the babies don't like it (Logan hates it). Today Charlotte rolled over for the first time (tummy to back). She was so excited when she did it!

We've started reading books to the babies. They both seem to love books. For Logan and Charlotte's 4 month birthday, I put together their rainforest jumperoo. I am pretty proud of myself, since I did it all by myself. Usually I let Kevin do those kinds of things.

Other news:
-Something is eating our garden! We think it may be a possum. Kevin set a live trap tonight. Hopefully we catch the thief. We'll keep you posted.
-Kevin's hockey season just finished up. He led his team in scoring. Unfortunately, I have never seen him score a goal, even though I've attended several games. I guess I better stay away!
-We went to a Ducks playoff game last week. They are currently playing the Red Wings.

Happy Easter!

We spent Saturday night celebrating Easter with Kevin's family. We had a nice dinner. Logan and Charlotte received books from Grandma and Grandpa Grant for Easter.

On Sunday morning we went to church. Charlotte wore a dress for the first time, a dress that her mommy wore when she was a baby! We spent the rest of the day with lots of people from Amber's side of the family. The babies were a big hit, as usual. They got Easter baskets and second cousin Aubree decorated Easter eggs for them.

Sleeping Through the Night!

We are excited to report that Logan and Charlotte have been sleeping through the night for the past week! They sleep for 7-8 hours at a time. We still swaddle them in their burrito wraps, which helps them sleep good. Napping is a different story. Charlotte takes one long 2 1/2 hour nap during the day, but Logan won't nap for more than 20 minutes. Hopefully this changes so I can get some work done during the day.

3 Months Old!

The babies will be 3 months old on April 3rd. They are getting to be more fun every day and they are starting to look and act more like people. Charlotte likes to "talk" and smile. Logan smiles and is starting to "talk." He has really strong legs and loves to stand up. Logan has a temper and cries huge tears within seconds of getting upset.

Logan weighs 10 1/2 pounds and Charlotte weights 9 1/2 pounds.

I am having so much fun dressing Logan and Charlotte! They received a lot of cute baby clothes. It must be nice to have new outfits to wear all the time!

This month has been a month of firsts - first trip to Kevin's hockey game, first time they wore shoes, Charlotte's first pair of jeans, went to church as a family for the first time, went to Auntie Laura's softball game.

2 Months Old

Logan and Charlotte are 2 months old now! They are much more alert and want to be held all of the time. Our slings have been really helpful for carrying the babies. Charlotte is learning to "talk" to us. Both Logan and Charlotte are starting to smile! They are definitely getting bigger. Logan is almost 9 pounds and Charlotte is about 7 1/2 pounds.

There is absolutely no way I could go back to work right now. I am taking a leave of absence for the rest of the school year. It's really difficult to care for Logan and Charlotte alone right now. We are grateful for lots of help that we're getting, especially from my mom and my grandparents. Kevin's mom and my sisters have also been great help. Kevin stays home on Fridays to help me. I don't know what I'd do without all of these people!

In other news, Kevin has been doing really well at hockey. He has had 4 goals and many assists so far this season. Hopefully the babies and I can go see him play soon.

Wow, it's already been a month with these little ones. It was kinda weird almost a month into the parenting thing and we came to their due date, thinking how glad we are that they're here. Sometimes they are angels and sometimes they are a handful ... but they're always ours and we're continually grateful. I'm back to work with the start of the Spring semester, but Amber is getting lots of love and help from her mom and grandparents throughout the week.

Life 2.0

Well, we all survived the first week. The team is still getting used to each other but hopefully pretty soon we'll be on the same page... or I'd settle for at least the same book. So far the kids love car rides and particularly Coldplay's new album. They've experienced their first adventure at In-N-Out (although we ate in the car), watched a couple Ducks games on TV, and have gone for a couple strolls in the park.

The Adventure Begins

Well they finally made it! We are happy to announce the births of Charlotte Jane & Logan Thomas. Both of our troopers arrived on Saturday, January 3rd at 4:21pm and 9:07pm respectively.

Ready & Waiting

Now that we've completed all of our baby preparation classes I feel like I should have an extra bachelors degree in baby care. These couple pictures are from the CPR & safety class. I'm practicing the infant Heimlich maneuver and Amber is working on the infant CPR. Grandpa & Grandma Wiens and Grandma Grant also attended with us. Grandpa Grant was home recovering from shoulder surgery.

Well... apparently everything in our home can kill our children. They definitely know how to make the new parents freak-out. I developed two infant safety systems while sitting in class. The first is the hamster ball approach and the second involves wrapping ones baby in bubble packing wrap. I'll give them a shot in a couple months and let you know how it goes.

December Adventures

So it was my birthday... I'm getting to be an old fart. You should see my gray hair!
I spent my birthday evening in class learning how to change diapers, give baths, and swaddle the babies. I have become a regular party animal.

OK, so this was super cool. I'm a big Disney geek. Even though Amber regularly makes fun of me and my affinity for Mary Poppins, she bought me a share of stock for The Walt Disney Company. It's nice and framed and awesome.

December also saw the end of my second hockey season. Our team (The Moose) was pretty good for being a bunch of rookies. Even better though, it's a good group of people. I'm looking forward to our second season together beginning in January.

Just sitting on the wall before the game while the zamboni finishes resurfacing the ice. I was nominated by my teammates to wear one of the "A's" as alternate captain for our team. Hopefully I served them well.

OK so this was actually taken at Thanksgiving...so it's not technically December, but Daisy was just too cute sporting her walking jacket to not put into this blog update.

Pre-Babies Getaway!

Last week Kevin surprised me with a pre-babies getaway. He packed my stuff for overnight (without me knowing it). We started out by eating some good food at the Lazy Dog Cafe.

Next, we went to Disneyland to see some of the Christmas decorations.

We stayed overnight at the Hyatt in Huntington Beach, where we have always wanted to stay. We enjoyed the outside hot tubs (I only put my legs in, don't worry) and fireplaces. Kevin gave me some beautiful earrings that he got for me in Vermont. The next day we enjoyed a relaxing couples massage. This was exciting for us because neither of us had ever had a professional massage before. Then we had lunch at Ruby's on the pier. I'm blessed to have a wonderful husband who planned a great surprise!

A maternity outfit from the 1950's. My Grandma wore this when she was pregnant with my aunt. There is a hole for the belly and then it ties around the top of the belly. The outfit is actually more comfortable that I thought it would be.

On Sunday my sisters threw a baby shower for me. My mother-in-law hosted the shower. Guests included local family and family friends from Kevin's side. I got a lot of fabulous gifts (a swing, bouncer, jumperoo, cute clothes, toys, and more). Kevin's family's next door neighbor is like a grandma to Kevin. She made beautiful handmade quilts for the babies. My sister Amanda made a really cute twins cake.

We had to smell and taste baby food. I can't believe babies eat this stuff!

Rockin' Babies Shower

Last weekend our church small group threw us a baby shower. The theme was Rock-A-Bye-Babies with an emphasis on the rock. We enjoyed Mexican food, opening gifts and playing twin-themed games. The best part was rocking out on Guitar Hero: World Tour.

They'll be opening for Coldplay next month.

Fall Adventures

My favorite season is now finally upon us, although 100 degree weather doesn't exactly bode of autumn. We've already made two batches of gingersnap cookies (no pictures of these, since they are in my belly). Our sunflowers have already come and gone but they were pretty while they lasted.

I was able to attend a Legal Issues in Higher Education conference in Vermont at the beginning of October. The conference was good, but Vermont was amazing. The trees looked as though they were on fire with all of the reds, oranges, and yellows. God must vacation in Vermont in the Fall! It was a memorable trip and valued chance to spend some time with the other great Student Development guys. We were told we visited at the peak of the leaf season. The locals call all of the tourists the "leaf peeps" as they walk around collecting pictures, leaves and memories. I must confess I did my fair share of all of the above. Check out some of the pictures of the trip.

Build - A - Bear

Last week Kevin and I went to Build-A-Bear to "build" animals for the babies. I made a classic teddy bear for the girl. Kevin made a monkey for the boy. I think these are our first gifts for the babies (other than their nursery furniture, which isn't too exciting). It was kind of weird typing the babies' names in as owners of their animals on the animals' birth certificates. We're not telling the babies' names - they are top secret and will be revealed when the babies are born. No one knows except for Kevin and me.

Well... the office has now evolved into the nursery. My safe place full of guitars and Xbox happiness has warped into chair rails, cribs (yes, plural), and cherry furniture. (Although I did manage to salvage the Xbox). After assembling several hundred pounds of furniture, and painting the walls, we have a first draft of the babies' room. We'll post more pictures when we get things decorated.

20 Weeks Pregnant

We're halfway there (or maybe more)!! I'm feeling good right now. I love feeling the babies move! I think I'm mainly feeling the girl right now, based on where the babies are positioned. It's hard to imagine how big my belly could get if the babies decide to stick around until January.

This week we had our anatomy scan to check out the twins and make sure everything is looking like it should. Perhaps most exciting, we got to find out the sexes. We are very happy to announce that Amber is cooking up a brother and sister set! Yup one boy and one girl.

We got their first Angels baseball shirts the other day after we found out. We're super excited to introduce them to you all in a few months. They both have their names already, but their names are hush hush top secret until their debut.

In-State Tourists

In between Summer school, faculty conference, and Amber's 3rd wedding of the summer we needed to escape down to San Diego for a few days. We visited our animal friends down at the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld. We explored the lighthouse on Point Loma and the Cabrillo National monument. Next we saw a Padres vs. Brewers game at Petco Park. This is a great, new ballpark built right in the center of downtown San Diego. You should catch a game there if you haven't already. Here are a few pictures from the trip.

An Unlikely Hero

A couple weeks back, I decided to indulge my inner rock star with a purchase of Guitar Hero 3. Little did I know that another in our home would take to the guitar hero like Michael Phelps and water. Amber has officially become the guitar hero enthusiast.

She recently got her own guitar for her Birthday.

OK... so if you haven't played, you need to play the correct combination of "strings" or "chords" by holding down the corresponding colored buttons and then strumming on the strum bar as the timing is right. Amber is currently honing her rock skills to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London.

Breaking My Top Three...

Amber and I went to see John Mayer last night with my brother MJ and her sister Amanda at the venue formerly known as Irvine Meadows. Hands down, this guy is one of the best guitarists of my generation. Utterly amazing to watch as his talent spans generations and genres of music. This show has entered the top three concerts of my life joining Nickel Creek at the San Diego House of Blues and Coldplay's X&Y tour at Irvine. OK, so Daisy Dog hasn't gotten much screen time yet. Her publicist was chewing me out the other day that she needed a little more time in front of the American public. So without further ado... our furry family member.

Last weekend I scored my first two goals in league for my ice hockey team. The first was a one-timer while crashing the slot and the second was a wrap around beating the keeper at the post.

My Summer So Far . . .

I've been teaching summer school. I have 8 days left, but who's counting? Then I have jury duty, which I've never done before. I also have lots of doctor's appointments, which I don't mind, since I love seeing the babies.

I was in 2 beautiful weddings this summer. I haven't been in a wedding since my own. On June 29th, I was a bridesmaid in my friend Sarah Higgins' wedding (college roommate) from Sacramento. Kevin was a trooper and went up to Sacramento with me for a long weekend.

On July 5th, I was in Lisa Ramsland's wedding. She's a high school and college friend. It was fun being in 2 weddings, 2 weekends in a row.

OK so we figured we ought to join all the cool kids with the family blog thing. We've got two buns in the oven right now (hence the Grant Squared title)! We go in for the 12 week ultrasound tomorrow, hopefully the little ones will be cooperative.

I think we should all keep track of our ages by week, it is much more precise. Amber wins in our family with 1456 weeks, Kevin ranks second at 1439 weeks, Daisy Dog comes in at 228 weeks, and the twins are rockin' the end of the first trimester at 12 weeks.

Backyard Summer

During November and December we worked on overhauling our little back yard. With a lot of help from my dad & brother, we turned this space into a nice patio area. Our garden did very well this summer, especially the tomatoes and zucchini.

One of the things we were most looking forward to were summer dinners in the new backyard. We had a piece of glass made that can transform our fire pit into a table. We finally got to break in the table with some good summer burgers & grilled veggies that we grew in our garden!
